Gavin Newsom and Sacramento politicians are pushing Prop 50 — a move that would eliminate California’s independent citizens redistricting commission and give politicians the power to redraw their own districts. That means gerrymandering, backroom deals, wasted tax dollars, and an end to fair elections in our state.
"California politicians are trying to end fair elections — and San Diego must lead the fight to stop them," said Republican Party of San Diego County Chairwoman Paula Whitsell.
Governor Newsom and state Democrats are framing Prop 50 as a way to ensure 'fair elections' and 'protect democracy,' but it does the exact opposite. Currently, California has an independent commission made up of citizens who redraw congressional district lines every ten years. Prop 50 takes that power away from citizens and gives it to politicians, letting them choose their voters instead of the other way around. That means that Prop 50, the 'Election Rigging Response Act,' lets politicians rig their own elections by ending the Independent Citizens' Redistricting Commission.
California Democrats claim that this change is 'temporary,' but Whitsell explains that "once politicians have power, they don't like to give it back."
Many of the politicians backing Prop 50 were opposed to the Independent Redistricting Commission when it was implemented by California voters in 2010.
"California Democrats have been looking for a way to take back redistricting power for years, and this is their excuse," said Whitsell, noting that an extension to Prop 50 will likely occur after the next census if it passes in November.
"We can't let this corrupt scheme to rig elections permanently in California pass," said Whitsell.
That's why the Republican Party of San Diego County is mobilizing to DEFEAT Prop 50 at the ballot box this November. As one step, the party is organizing a series of volunteer canvassing deployment events to knock on doors and talk directly with voters.
"Together, we will educate voters on the TRUTH about Prop 50 — and why it must be defeated," explained Whitsell. "Every conversation matters. By knocking on doors and speaking directly to voters, you can make the difference in whether California keeps fair elections or hands power back to the corrupt politicians in Sacramento."
"This election is too important to sit out. If we want to have fair election in San Diego County in 2026, it starts with stopping Prop 50 today," concluded Whitsell.
