The Republican Party of San Diego County has joined forces with the statewide CA Voter ID Initiative campaign to defend election integrity and stop Gov. Gavin Newsom’s corrupt Prop 50 redistricting scheme — launching one of the largest grassroots mail and volunteer drives in California history.
Over the past several weeks, party volunteers have been busy preparing and distributing thousands of handwritten mailers from the party’s headquarters. These letters are part of a massive statewide effort — totaling 1.5 million handwritten letters — urging voters to sign petitions to qualify the California Voter ID Initiative and vote NO on Prop 50.
“This isn’t just another piece of political mail — these are personal, hand-addressed letters from neighbors who are fed up with corruption in our state,” said Paula Whitsell, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of San Diego County. “Our volunteers are proving that people power can still beat big money and political insiders.”
The California Voter ID Initiative, filed by leaders including Assemblyman Carl DeMaio and Senator Tony Strickland, seeks to restore confidence and accountability in state elections by requiring identification to vote and mandating annual audits to verify voter rolls.
If passed, the measure would:
“Voter ID is simple, fair, and overwhelmingly supported by the public,” said Whitsell. “It’s about restoring confidence that every legal vote counts — and that no one’s vote is canceled out by fraud or error.”
At the same time, SDGOP volunteers are warning voters about Proposition 50, a measure pushed by Gavin Newsom and Sacramento Democrats that would dismantle California’s independent redistricting commission and hand power back to politicians behind closed doors.
“Prop 50 is nothing more than a corrupt power grab,” Whitsell said. “It would let the same politicians who created California’s problems pick their own voters. That’s why the San Diego GOP is fully mobilized to defeat it.”
From preparing mail kits to hosting signature drives across the county, SDGOP members and volunteers have turned their headquarters into a hub of grassroots activity. The party’s volunteer teams have been handwriting, sorting, and mailing letters — not just printed envelopes, but personal notes from local residents urging their neighbors to act.
“These handwritten letters carry real weight because they’re personal, not mass-produced,” said Whitsell. “Every single letter is a sign that Californians are taking our state back from political insiders.”
The campaign to qualify Voter ID and defeat Prop 50 is being described as a “buy-one-get-one” effort — with volunteers able to achieve two critical goals through one coordinated grassroots drive.
“By signing a Voter ID petition and voting NO on Prop 50, Californians can defend fair elections and stop Sacramento’s corrupt schemes in one sweep,” said Whitsell. “We’re not waiting for politicians to fix this — we’re doing it ourselves.”
The Republican Party of San Diego County is calling on local residents to take three immediate steps to defend fair elections in California:
“This is an all-hands-on-deck moment,” said Whitsell. “Our volunteers are fired up, our office is buzzing, and our movement is growing every day. If we work together, we can restore integrity, accountability, and trust in California’s elections.”
