IN LEBANON: VISITING US LEGISLATOR DARRELL ISSA, INSISTS AMERICA DOES NOT INTERFERE
BEIRUT: US Congressman Darrell Issa reiterated on Monday his country's support for the government of Lebanon and affirmed the need to resume national dialogue. "It is important for us, in the United States and in the West, to hear what the Lebanese people want and what the legitimate Lebanese government looks for," Issa said.
"It is not our concern to interfere in internal affairs," he added. The congressman met separately on Monday with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora in the Grand Serail, Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain al-Tineh and Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun in Rabieh.
"The meeting with General Michel Aoun was short but very positive," Issa said after his visit to Rabieh.
Issa said Aoun still insists on a national unity government. "In fact, this is an internal matter, but the United States will support the democratic efforts as well as the Lebanese people's battle against terrorism and outside forces."
The legislator also visited parliamentary majority leader MP Saad Hariri in Qoreitem.
"We visited many places today, but the main destination remains here [in Qoreitem], because if we want to look at Lebanon's future, we should talk to the Future Movement bloc and especially to Saad Hariri," Issa said.
