REPUBLICANS DOMINATE LOCAL ELECTIONS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

As a result of last night's election, Republicans will continue to dominate local government throughout San Diego County.

A preliminary look at results in San Diego shows that the Republican Party's commitment to its candidates for local government offices continued to produce tangible results as over 215 Republican candidates endorsed by the party have won, and climbing.

The victories include Brian Bilbray for Congress, Shirley Horton for State Assembly, Cheryl Cox for Mayor of Chula Vista, an expanded Republican majority in Oceanside, clean sweeps in several cities including La Mesa, Escondido, Carlsbad and El Cajon, and more than 200 other local offices.

State tax increases were defeated, while San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders' reform initiatives were passed by wide margins.

Governor Schwarzenegger won the county by a stunning margin of 37%.

Republicans retained several mayor's offices including Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista, Poway and El Cajon, while new Republicans were elected in Imperial Beach and Chula Vista, further expanding the Republican Party's reach in South County.
