Wendell

Today Ron Nehring, Chairman of the Republican Party of San Diego County and Vice Chairman of the California Republican Party, issued the following statement following this morning's loss of long time Republican leader and friend Wendell Cutting.

Southern Californians today suffered a tragic loss as Wendell R. Cutting slipped the bonds of Earth.

Wendell Cutting was truly one of a kind: compassionate, giving, principled, and truly gifted.

The community that is the Republican Party enjoyed a long friendship with Wendell Cutting, who at age 23 was elected to the San Jacinto City Council, and two years later became the youngest mayor in America.

Since 1991, Wendell served as District Chief of Staff for Congressman Duncan Hunter. He concurrently served as the volunteer vice president of the Rescue Task Force, aiding the striken in places like Kosovo, Pakistan and El Salvador.

Closer to home, Wendell served our community as a member of the Grossmont Hospital board, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, the East County Economic Development Council, and the Olaf Wieghorst Museum. He was also involved with the El Cajon Rotary Club, the American Legion, the El Cajon Elks Lodge, and the Salvation Army.

In 2002 the Republican Party of San Diego County created "The Wendell Award" to recognize the most influential Republican political staff member in San Diego County. The award is presented each Spring at the annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner.

Earlier this year, the Grossmont Union High School District dedicated the new football field at El Capitan High School "Wendell R. Cutting Field." (photo)
